Marco Vitale at Staatstheater Augsburg

In the fall of 2023 we visited Marco Vitale at Staatstheater Augsburg to see how they work with and incorporate Capture into their workflow.

Their "Großes Haus" (Great House) theate has been under renovation since 2001 and is expected to be completed in 2029/30. Meanwhile, the Augsburg State Theatre is spread over its interim venues - the martini-Park and the Brechtbühne in the Gaswerk. Small and special performances sometimes take place in other locations in the city center of Augsburg as well.

"Großes Haus" (Great House)
Augsburg’s theatre history begins in 1665 with the establishment of the Meistersinger-Stadel in Jakobervorstadt. After its destruction in the Second World War in 1944, the theatre was rebuilt after the end of the war with the most intensive citizen participation and reopened in 1956.

Interim venue Gaswerk
Since January 2019, small acting and ballet productions with around 230 seats have also been on display in the new Brechtbühne in the Gaswerk. Components and technology of the old Brechtbühne at Kennedy-Platz were reinstalled here, such as the visitor seats and ventilation technology. The workshops and several company offices are also housed here.

Interim venue Martini Park
On the first of October 2017, the theatre put into operation its new interim venue in martini-Park. A fully functional theatre with 620 seats, offices and rehearsal rooms was created from two vacant industrial halls. Here we got to see one of Marco Vitales lighting designs in the ballet "Charlie".

Interview with lighting designer Marco Vitale

Marco Vitale, born in Augsburg, developed his passion for lighting design during his training as an event technology specialist. In early 2012, he completed his training as a lighting master and subsequently worked as a lighting master under the direction of Kai Luczak at the Theater Augsburg. Later, he moved to the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, where he served as a lighting master and resident lighting designer.

Since 2016, he has been working as a lecturer and trainer for digital lighting design with Capture visualisation across Europe. For the 2021/22 season, he returned to Augsburg and assumed the role of head of the lighting department at the Staatstheater Augsburg.
