When importing a PNG file onto an Image object in Capture, the alpha channel is not being retained. I have managed to get this working correctly before. The properties panel confirmed the file as "8-bit with alpha", and transparency was respected in the viewport. However, I cannot reproduce this consistently.

When I now import or replace the image, Capture shows the file as plain "8-bit" — no alpha — and the image renders without transparency.

Screenshot 1 Working state (alpha recognized)

The properties panel reads: 4534 x 3127, 8-bit with alpha The thumbnail shows the image with a transparent background (the black in the preview indicates transparency is present).

(See attachment 1)

Screenshot 2 Current broken state (alpha stripped)

The properties panel reads: 1290 x 1696, 8-bit No alpha channel is recognized, despite the source PNG containing transparency.

(See attachment 2)

Steps to reproduce

  1. Place an Image object in the scene
  2. Import a PNG file that contains an alpha channel
  3. Properties panel shows "8-bit" only — alpha is not recognized
  4. Image renders without transparency

Question

Is there a specific requirement for Capture to recognize and preserve the alpha channel of a PNG? For example:

  • A minimum bit depth or specific PNG encoding?
  • A particular import method (not just "replace image")?
  • A setting on the Image object itself?

Any insight into what differs between these two cases would be very helpful. Happy to provide the source PNG files if useful for debugging.

Kind regards,

Julian

Thanks for reporting this - it should definitely work.

The text "with alpha" should be there if the loaded PNG contains an alpha channel.

I tried a couple of images and I got it to work, so I suspect there's something special about the PNG you're trying. It would be awesome if you could provide it?

Cheers,
Pelle

I forgot to answer your questions:

  • The bit depth must be 8, RGBA.
  • No specific import method should be required.
  • No specific setting is required either.
