Is there anything you can do about the slow downloads of the library? Could you either improve download speeds (server side) or make downloads in the background possible? It takes a very long time at the moment in which you cannot do anything else.

But... you can't work with library stuff, the other features are accessible while the download is running.

Slow downloads in part of the world is something that is on our radar and we're looking into it. But, there's a number of complications surrounding it.
In the meanwhile, if you download the library update from our web site rather than from within Capture, then you can use Capture in the meanwhile.
I am at the other end of the world - so slow is the norm at times. Simply done, I just use my web browser to download the Library file. Then once on my machine I can update the library instantly by using the "Install Manually..." option. No constraint to my workflow.
