I have been told that this is not possible at the moment (I have 2024 Duet, but people tell me it is not in 2025 either), but I would like to request that the ability to remotely change scenes in Capture *without* using DMX be added in a future release.
The situation:
I use either a Chamsys console or a Chamsys PC+Wing setup for all my lighting work. When programming I sit in my studio with Capture projected on the wall at the end, giving me a near life-sized view of the virtual stage. The machine running Capture is behind me and facing the other way (this is not moveable, and my alternative Capture machine is in a rack so even less mobile!), and so I need to be able to remotely control which scene I’m seeing in Capture so I can program appropriate lighting. I can use DMX for this but there are problems with that:
- If I use the Chamsys console for controlling the scenes this will result in a lot of additional programming, buttons, cues, and patching just to control Capture. At a minimum it looks like I will have to allocate 14 channels to it as you cannot control only the scene.
- Even assuming that is possible in the available address space, that will leave a lot of config on the console that is dedicated to Capture. If I am passing that back and forth between the live rig and the programming rig I will have to leave it in, and that will cause issues. Not only will that mean I have to put up with a lot of my console dedicated to something I will not be using at the live event, but those 14 channels may well interfere with something at the venue. I occasionally work in a theatre that has 4 universes completely patched with always-on “stuff”, in addition to the normal stage lighting. They have setups for stage, in-the-round, audience lights, wings, house lights, blinders, effects, and more, most of which are grouped fairly sensibly. If I accidentally sent DMX to one of the things I am not using literally anything could happen - blinders, smoke, air horn (?) - so I have to be very careful not to patch anything I do not need.
- I can use an external DMX controller such as another Chamsys installation, Bitfocus Companion, QLC+ (if that still works) etc, but then something will have to do a partial universe DMX merge, and that is assuming I have enough address space anyway.
What I want to do is to be able to set up TouchOSC, Companion, or similar to send OSC commands directly to Capture to change scenes. In my particular use-case I have no need to move the camera, but I suspect others would find that useful too. Then I can have an iPad next to me when I am programming and flick between scenes as the director talks me through what the actors will be doing without having to get up and go to the Capture machine at the desk behind me. The only solution I have now is VNC or TeamViewer onto the Capture machine, but that is unnecessarily clunky.
