No, not tears, but rather visual glitches, or seams, between screen updates. It's explained and illustrated well in this Wikipedia article.

While tearing can occur in Capture in both Windows and macOS, it is a lot more prevalent on Windows - and particularly after the last Windows update 24H2 in the fall last year. Microsoft made some architectural changes there that hit Capture hard.

While we just released Capture 2025, we wanted to let you know that we are currently working on some improvements for a 2025.1 update that we're hoping to release in the next few weeks.

One of these improvements will be trying to reduce tearing as much as possible, if not completely.

In the meanwhile, you may be able to reduce the tearing on Windows by adjusting the settings of your video card drivers, likely in a VSync-related option.

We have now spent a good few weeks on investigating the tearing issues on Windows 11 and can offer an update.

Unfortunately we have come to the conclusion that the tearing is out of our control and most likely an issue with Windows itself. During our research we have found that Capture is far from the only application hit by tearing - a wide range of desktop apps, including web browsers, appear to have been hit and the common denominator seems to be the 24H2 update.

A further complication is that it does not appear to be consistent on which machines tearing occurs. We have seen both NVidia- and AMD-based systems that exhibit the tearing and those that don't.

Manipulating NVidia's or AMD's drivers settings for VSync can help eliminate tearing. Be aware that these settings often impact frame rate negatively and could interfere with adaptive quality.

At this point all we can do is recommend everyone to keep updating their video card drivers and installing the latest Windows updated.

We will continue monitoring the situation and let you know if anything changes.
