More than 380 fixtures, a moving set, a revolve and a schedule that left no time to programme on stage. For Korea National Opera's Peter Grimes, lighting designer Eloi Gianini designed and programmed the entire show in advance with Capture, then ran it with the cast in costume after four days of on-site setup.
Showcase background
Peter Grimes was presented by Korea National Opera at the Seoul Arts Center in June 2026, in a production directed by Julien Chavaz and conducted by Alexander Joel. Eloi used Capture extensively throughout the creative and pre-programming process, which made it possible to design and programme the whole lighting show before arriving on stage.
The challenge
The set, designed by Amber Vandenhoeck, had several mobile elements, and the production also made use of a revolve. Combined with a particularly tight production schedule, this meant the complete lighting programming had to be finalised before the stage rehearsals began.
Building the set in Capture
Renée Favrée modelled the set in 3D before it was imported into Capture, giving the team an accurate 3D representation of the scenery to work with.
Because the set moved and the stage revolved, Eloi created more than 20 different scenes in Capture to reproduce the various stage configurations. This made it possible to adapt the lighting programming to each one from the pre-programming stage onwards.
Programming before the stage
The team had access to a dedicated rehearsal room equipped with a grandMA2 Light. There, the lighting states, cues and show integration were designed and programmed during the studio rehearsals, well before the stage was available.
On site
The production combined conventional and moving lights, with more than 380 fixtures in total. After four days of on-site setup, including the focusing of the conventional fixtures and the preparation of moving-light presets, the team was able to run the show directly with the cast in costume.
What made the difference
The features that mattered most for this production:
- 3D scenery import: work with an accurate 3D model of the set.
- Multiple scenes: reproduce each stage configuration, with more than 20 scenes covering the mobile set elements and the revolve.
- Pre-programming: design and programme the show before arriving on stage, even under a demanding schedule.
"This production was a particularly valuable opportunity to demonstrate how Capture can be integrated into the creative and programming process, especially when working under a demanding production schedule. The use of multiple scenes in Capture also allowed us to account for the different movements of the set and the revolve from the pre-programming stage onwards."
